Being a Landscape Photographer can certainly have it’s perks that is for sure. I have recently been going through all of my old images and sometimes it is good to just sit back and reflect where a job has taken you. In the short time I have been out capturing nature I have managed to see quite a lot of things and even though I still have so much of the country to see I can tell you Australia has some incredible places to see. Most people here in Australia don’t get to see how amazing the country we live in actually is and i find that somewhat sad because Australia actually has a so so much to offer but having places like Bali and Thailand so close people tend to head overseas to see a large chunk of what we have here in our own country. It might seem like I am having a dig at international travel but I am certainly not however, after looking at some of the photos I have taken in the past 8 years all within Australia I think people need to see some of what we have to offer and all within a short drive or plane flight. Here is a very small section of our country they call the Great Barrier Reef and we have 3,000 km’s of the stuff so why not make your next holiday somewhere in Australia, there are many, many national parks and a large amount of them are even World Heritage Listed so I hope to see you out there.

The Sunshine Coast is mainly known for its beaches but what a lot of people don’t know is there is a lot more to the Sunshine Coast than just the beaches. Here is a photo taken in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, there aren’t too many compositions to this waterfall but I think this one works quite well.

Canon 5D mark II | 24-70mm 2.8L | 7 image stitch

I hadn’t done a vertical stitch before but this scene was one that called for a vertical composition rather than a horizontal.

Byron Bay…

What comes to mind when you think of Byron Bay, well for me it is a number of things as I have grown up surfing and living only an hours drive so I have made the trip south on a number of times. This particular trip I got to the Byron Lighthouse car park in complete darkness and began the walk up the hill to the spot I had in mind, waiting for the sun to rise but as the sky began to lighten I noticed that there was a mass of rain heading straight for me from behind the lighthouse so I packed up my camera leaving my tripod set up ready to go. It soon became clear that this rain was not your typical “she’ll be right” bit of drizzle but more of a its going to bucket down better leave and come back after it stops so I grabbed my tripod and headed back to the car somewhat disjointed and soaking wet. I started the car and put the heater on to get warm because I was soaked from head to toe and a few minutes later just as I was about to leave the rain died down and I saw the faintest hint of colour through the fogged up window.

It was on, I ran up the hill and set up in the same spot, fired off one roll (four images) and the light vanished not a single person around to witness the light show. This has happened to me a number of times and the few times that you pack up and leave generally are the best so I have learnt over the years that getting a little wet can sometimes be a blessing in disguise.

I hope you like this one… I love it!

Having recently purchased a Linhof 617s III I found a few things vastly different to my old Fuji G617 the first thing being the size of the lenses, they are big, beautiful and the also wear the Schneider brand that is well know for having the best optics in the world. Yes I adore the new camera but having these big luxurious lenses in front of your camera means that you need big filters to use with a bigger than normal lens. To give you an idea of the size I am talking about, your standard consumer grade lens will have a filter thread of around 55-58mm, your professional lenses start getting up in the high 60-70′s and the lenses on the Linhof 72mm and 90mm lenses have a thread of 95mm with out a centre filter and a whopping 112mm once the centre filter is attached. Needless to say my current LEE filters are not suitable for this camera system and I will have to find a better option, so after spending hours and hours researching my options there seemed to be just 2 options that seemed worth looking at.

Option 1
The Cokin X-Pro system which hold filters with a width of 130mm.

Option 2
Have a custom made filter setup from LEE Filters.

After discussing my options with a few other photographers who have used both systems as well as reading numerous articles on the internet it seemed as though the best image quality would come from option 2. The email I received from LEE Filters was that is was just not economical for them to make a custom made filter holder to suit the Linhof however they recommended getting hold of a Cokin X-Pro system and they would be able to make custom filters for the X-Pro system. Finally a solution to my dilemma of not having a suitable filter system for my new camera well at least I thought that would solve everything. After a number of email exchanges between LEE and myself it seems they are having an issue supplying filters to the public and there would be a lead time of 20 weeks for me to get my custom filters.

Below is an extract from the LEE Filters website explaining the supply issue of these amazing filters.

“We at LEE Filters are aware that our valued customers are currently facing increased waiting times, and would like to take this opportunity to explain the reasons behind the lengthy lead times of our orders.
Resin Production 1

We are in the fortunate position of having experienced an unprecedented demand for our filters over the past 18 months – in particular the neutral density graduated filters, the quality of which, we believe, are of the highest standard. We are able to attain this level of quality for the simple reason that the vast majority of our filters are hand-made. While this means we can be certain of customer satisfaction almost every time, the drawback is that we are able to produce only a limited number of filters each day – we cannot simply press a button and allow a machine do the rest.

We are as proud of our skilled team of technicians, who understand the complexities involved in producing filters that meet the standards expected by photographers, as we are of the products themselves. In the past, we have investigated the possibility of automating our manufacturing system, but we remain convinced that this option would end up compromising the quality of our product – something we are not prepared to risk. Many of our filters are used in conjunction with professional-specification lenses and to cut corners on their manufacture would lead to only one thing; a degradation of image quality, and this would be unacceptable.

In order to resolve these issues, we are currently recruiting and training additional staff, as well as installing more manufacturing equipment in our factory. This will vastly increase the production of our filters, and we anticipate the backlog will be greatly reduced by Autumn of 2011.
Resin Production 3

This massive increase in demand has also adversely affected our supply chain. We only use the best and often unique suppliers and they too have found it difficult to keep up with our demands. We also recognise the pressure that our distributors and dealers have been under for the past year, and we appreciate their efforts.

We hope the above offers some reassurance, and would like to finish by stating that LEE Filters are committed to producing filters of the highest quality, and we are continuing to research and develop new products to add to our already comprehensive range and meet the exacting needs of our customers. Both now and for the future.

Thank you for your continued support and understanding.”

I have used LEE filters for the past 6 years and can’t fault them so it seems I am just going to have to wait this one out and in the mean time hope something at LEE changes and somehow I get my filters sooner than 20 weeks. Let me know your thoughts about the filters you use…

Cheers

G’day

Fraser Island holds a significant place in my heart as it is one the main reasons I started taking photographs. After a two week trip exploring the island I returned back to the Gold Coast with 11 rolls of film which when I got processed didn’t really capture the mood or feel of the island so I made it my goal to figure out what all these knobs and settings on the top of this old Pentax did. Who would have thought not being able to take a photo to save my life would lead me to becoming a photographer. Anyway, this was our second visit to Lake McKenzie and some how we managed to get the lake to ourselves not a single person in the water, on the beach or even in the carpark… I can tell you there are not too many people who can say they have had Lake McKenzie to themselves in the middle of the day that’s for sure, Lake McKenzie is the Bondi Beach of Fraser Island, people everywhere which makes this location a hard place to photograph without hoards of people in your image so I would have to say we hit the jackpot this time.

I hope you like this image…

Sometime ago I came across a blog post about backing up your data by photographer Chaise Jarvis which I reposted here, after watching the video on his blog it made me take a good look at the way I look after the most valuable asset to my business. That’s right I am talking about data! After watching that video I began developing a workflow that would work within my business. Now after spending hours and hours backing up, sorting, renaming and just making sure everything was in good order I am a happy man as today my Mac decided to throw the towel in and is no longer working. I am lucky because although I am up for a new computer I have at worst only lost 3 days of work but what I ask you is, can your business survive a hard drive crash and if the answer is no you need to do something about it right away.

I made a quick little flow chart of my workflow for those who would like to see it a more detailed part 2 will be coming later so stay tuned.

Cheers

My computer is now working but has no files luck for back ups if you ask me…

For starters, each month there will be an “Print of the Month” which will be available at a discounted rate. but along with the print of the month, I will be giving you an insight into some of the companies, products and services I use and recommend as well as the odd photo tip along the way. In the mean time this is an image taken from a different angle of the famous Q1 building in Surfers Paradise hope you like.

The change… you will have to wait and see but all I can say its a big one!!!
